Today's most well known wireless device is the "cell
phone."
Mobile telephones began as large vehicle mounted units
in the 1950's. These operator assisted two way radios were
connected to lines to complete their calls. Later, mobile
dialing made calling from the road more convenient.
By the 1980's, the concept of a wireless "cellular"
network was demonstrated to greatly increase the availability
of mobile telephone service. Soon, portable telephones gave
increased mobility.
The evolution of the wireless phone has been rapid. Today
they come in several technical flavors. iDEN, CDMA, GPRS,
and popular formats offered in the original cellular bands,
and more recently on higher frequencies.
The mobile business user often finds the wireless phone
a valuable part of the mobile communications solution.
